Common Questions Regarding Radiator
Performance and Radiator Heat Loss |
Should a cast iron radiator be replaced with a more modern
heating system such as forced air or baseboard? |
No! Cast iron radiator steam or hot water heat is the most efficient,
quietest and most comfortable of all heating systems. Converting to a
more “modern” method is expensive, would result in less comfort,
and would increase your heating costs. The worst alternative is baseboard heating – the convection process
involved is up to 30% less effective than radiator heating, needing
substantially higher water temperatures plus more BTUs and fuel to
provide the same amount of heat. Baseboard systems often require replacement because of overloading. (If you have a cast iron radiator,
count your blessings!)
Why aren’t cast iron radiators installed in
new homes and apartments? |
Cost. Manufacturing and installing a cast iron radiator today would
cost thousands of dollars more than the less efficient systems installed
by today’s builders.
Does a cast iron radiator system have to be removed to
install central air conditioning? |
Absolutely not. Today’s central air systems allow you to keep the
efficient heating of your cast iron radiator while enjoying substantially
lower installation costs for air conditioning.

Does a decorative radiator grill “choke off” heat,
or cause radiator heat lost? |
No. A decorative radiator enclosure will deliver more useful heat
energy and reduce radiator heat loss. All of the heat from your radiator
remains in the room, and due to the decorative radiator grill design,
the heat is projected into the comfort zone, where it’s needed.
Heat is also not absorbed by outside walls or concentrated at the
ceiling, where it’s wasted.
Does a decorative radiator grill take up
a lot of space? |
Radiator enclosures from Beautiful Radiators .com take up
about 1” on all sides.
Why shouldn’t a decorative radiator grill
be made from wood? |
Because wood is an insulator and contributes to radiator heat loss.
It also dries out, curls, splits and warps over time when exposed to
constant heat. Wooden frames and supports also take up far more
space than radiator enclosures from Beautiful Radiators .com.
I noticed that the decorative radiator grill enclosures have a
solid top panel. Why shouldn’t the top be louvered or open? |
Because heat would then flow directly up the wall to the ceiling, rather
than into the room. This will absolutely cause radiator heat loss!
Does a decorative radiator
grill get dirty? |
No more than other furniture. And, our radiator enclosures are
protected by a durable long-wearing, powder coated finish so they
can easily be dusted or cleaned with mild detergent and water.
Why shouldn’t I just paint
my cast iron radiator? |
Every coat of paint increases heat loss. Metallic paints are
the worst – efficiency losses range from 10% to 20%, depending
on the paint and how it’s applied.
I saw on your color selector that colors were all-new. Why is
that a selling point for a decorative radiator grill for an older home? |
In the US, consumer color preferences show up first on automobiles,
then home appliances. By studying and using this information in
choosing our six standard powder coated colors, we’re able to
provide radiator enclosures in the six most-desirable, most versatile –
and most neutral – colors. These colors were chosen specifically to be in harmony with the special architecture of old homes, and with décor and furnishings of all styles.
